Football Canterbury hosted a Free Football Gala Night at Pratten Park on Friday to celebrate the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Over 300 junior footballers took part in training stations and games with coaches as excitement continues to build towards the tournament.

The event is one of several activations taking place ahead of and during the tournament and Football Canterbury’s Female Development Officer Fiona Craven said it was great to see enthusiasm building.

“It’s fantastic to see the way that our community is embracing the hype of a World Cup on home soil,” Craven said on Friday.

“This is a great opportunity for us to harness the power of this tournament and get more girls and boys involved in football in Australia.”

Football Canterbury Chair Nick Kambounias commented on the success of the event and the importance of capturing the attention of the public with a tournament like the Women’s World Cup.

“We are very fortunate to be hosting a tournament of this magnitude in Australia and to have games in Sydney, and it presents us with this chance to bring football to the wider community here in our region,” Kambounias said.

“I was so pleased to see such a fantastic turnout on Friday night, and that’s a testament to the hard work put in by staff to make this activation come together.

“There are more events in the pipeline for Football Canterbury during the next month, and I am looking forward to seeing the impact that the Women’s World Cup can have on football as a whole.”

Football Canterbury will be hosting a Women’s World Cup event at South Campsie Bowling Club on Tuesday, 18th July, featuring a star-studded panel discussion and Q&A that will be free to attend. Click here to register now!
