Georgopoulos eyeing overseas adventures

Alexandra Georgopoulos lives and breathes football and wants to continue to empower and inspire women in the game.

Georgopoulos has been part of Strathfield FC for nearly two decades now and hopes to eventually expand her horizons overseas.

She remembers beginning her football journey as a shy child, but has grown confident as the years have gone by.

Georgopoulos works as a Grants Support Officer in the Office of Sport and has already made waves over the years promoting women in football.

She was chosen by FIFA in 2016 to visit FIFA headquarters in Zurich, where she took part in consolations for female football in the community.

"Everything's always football for me," she said.

"I just want to keep putting women at the forefront for women's sport and to promote females in sport.

"It's about normalising that. 'Hey, women are in football, women are in sport and they and they belong there too', and it's just been brilliant in that sense pushing that exposure."

She attended the Athens Women's Football Summit last year where she was able to make connections in the Greek A Division.

"My sister (Angelica) and I were invited, but she couldn't make it last year because she had to graduate, she said.

"I love the Greek A Division and I met the Panathinaikos women's team captain (Chara Dimitriou) and we just got on like a house on fire. It was so cool.

"We're constantly talking now and throwing ideas at each other on how to improve the game."

Georgopoulos has been involved in the game as both a referee and a player and is hopeful of continuing her journey one day outside of Australia.

While she is enjoying her time volunteering in football and working in her job, she feels like she has big fish to fry.

"I'd love to go overseas, and do coaching, especially in Greece," she said.

"But even my sister and I were headed to Greece in September this year again. And we're going back to that Athens women's football summit."
